update the week of June 15

Happy Father's Day to all the Wahoo dads!!

A few team updates:

1. 100 Lap Club: Thank you to everyone who came to the 100 Lap Club! We had 51 swimmers complete 100 Laps and 3 swimmers who made their best effort to get there. Amazing!!! I'm so proud of the hard work put into this by all these swimmers, and it was a fun morning! We will recognize this accomplishment at the end of season party.

2. Lisa's Creperie: Thank you to everyone who came out to Lisa's Creperie to eat dinner and/or dessert! It was fun to see everyone outside of the pool and to eat yummy food, and we appreciate your support of Lisa's Creperie and Wahoos!

3. New record: Congratulations to Ella Hinton again for breaking another record from 2014 (Maddie Castrillo) in the 13-14 year old girls 50 yd. butterfly with a time of 31.63. Way to go, Ella!

4. Lost and found: I put most items straight into the lost and found box opposite the girls bathroom, but I keep the Wahoo specific stuff in my bag. I now have 3 Wahoo tshirts (sizes youth L, youth XL, and adult M). One swimmer is missing her youth M tshirt but I haven't seen it. I also found a boys size 24 suit (looking like it might not be the first year this suit was worn!). I also lost my own blue Owala water bottle with a Wahoo sticker on it Friday evening at the pool while playing cards, so please let me know if you found it. I encourage you again to write initials or names on t-shirts so that I can return them more easily if they're found. I also have a few pair of found goggles.

5. Volunteering: I keep track of all the volunteers through our computer program, and I notice some families haven't volunteered yet. We ask that each family volunteer for at least 2 spots during the season. The most common excuse I hear is "I get too nervous timing and I don't want to mess anything up", and timing is what we will need the most for the remainder of the season. I can show you how to do it and let you practice with a stopwatch if you'd like - it's actually my favorite job, and the kids LOVE seeing their own parents right there before their races. Anyways, please sign up if you can!

6. Next meet: Our next meet is at Timberlake. Many things will be similar, so I will highlight the things that will be DIFFERENT:

  • We are GUESTS at their pool, so we will need to respect any expectations they have for the meet. I have no control over when the warm ups will start or when the meet will end or where they want us to park or how much their concessions cost. I'll share their expectations once I receive them. Let's be the best guests!
  • We will meet in Wilshire to do a golf cart caravan to their pool, and you are welcome to join us if you'd like. It's really fun, and it's the only meet we'll be able to golf cart caravan to. I'll send out the time and location to meet once I know when we start warm ups. We won't caravan home though since different swimmers will finish at different times.
  • They will offer a 100 yd. IM (Individual Medley) as an exhibition race at the end of the meet. 100 yd. IM = 4 laps in a row which include 1 lap of each stroke in the order butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle. Exhibition = you may swim this as a third event (after the two individual races you choose) and you will get a time but no ribbons for this race. We will talk about this race and practice it in the 9 am practice, the 10 am practice, and in Coach Micah's lanes only of the 8 am practice starting on Monday. This would not be an appropriate race for many of our youngest and newest swimmers. If your swimmer wants to sign up for this race, I will need to confirm that they can do all 4 strokes legally because it is a long race to do and then get DQ'd! The 100 IM will be swum at this meet as well as at the City Meet, so there are only 2 chances to swim this race during the season.
  • This will definitely be our LONGEST dual meet of the season because this is the only team we are swimming whose team is bigger than ours. And not everyone has a starter who can talk as fast as an auctioneer! Since it will be a late night, if your swimmer is racing in the 100 IM at the end of the meet, we ask that you step in to help as a timer during this 100 IM races so that our 2nd shift timers can go home. I won't have a volunteer sign up spot for timing the 100 IM, but just know that we need you to help out since you'll be there anyways. It will likely be dark when the 100 IM's are swimming. If your swimmers are all 10 and younger, you may have noticed that you finish much earlier if you choose backstroke and freestyle. It's up to you - I just wanted you to be prepared for a longer night at this meet.
  • Timberlake is offering a fun parent medley relay before the meets starts. If you're interested in signing up to race and you know how to do a stroke, please sign up through the volunteer area (but know that this doesn't count as "volunteering"). I have a men's A and B relay as well as a women's A and B relay in the sign ups. I will sign up to make a women's relay full if needed. Please sign up by Tuesday at 11 am! If we don't have enough parents to make a certain relay, we won't race that relay. It'd be kinda fun to do! Maybe the 1st annual??? We'll see how it goes!
  • They close their restrooms to all and have porta-potties availablefor all to use. (After our restroom issues last week, I understand why!) I just want you to be aware of the restroom situation so you can best prepare.
  • Timberlake pool is DEEP. This won't affect most of our swimmers, but our youngest and newest swimmers may be intimidated by this as the color of the water looks different and the thought of "deep water" can be scary to some. We will talk about it at practice to emphasize that we only swim at the top of the water anyways so it doesn't matter how deep it is. It will be good practice for the City Meet since the Kedron pool is also deep.

We look forward to making the most of our last 2 weeks of Wahoos! As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Wahooooooooo!

Coach Susan
